In the 2nd half of May, the MS Norilskiy Nickel*, belonging to MMC Norilsk Nickel entered the Tallinn Shipyard.
After one year sailing in real arctic conditions in Northern Russia, vessel needed in dry-docking and close inspection in order to find out the best technological solutions for the next vessels in series. Repair and dry-docking that Aker Yards owes the MMC Norilsk Nickel as part of the original contract and Tallinn Shipyard has been selected as the one of sub-contractors. This allows Tallinn Shipyard to take care of such items like repair of coating (hull plating, superstructure and water ballast tanks), upgrading of steam heating system, including renewal of pipes and installation of numerous valves, accommodation and assistance to other sub-contracting companies involved in the project.
The ship arrived to Tallinn Shipyard on May 20th and it will be redelivered at 22 p.m. 15th of June when it is hoped all items will be completed.
*MS Norilskiy Nickel, an arctic container vessel built under NB 505 at Aker Yards in Helsinki, was delivered on 11 April 2006 to the Russian MMC Norilsk Nickel, one of the world’s leading metallurgic companies. MS Norilskiy Nickel is a prototype based on the double-acting ship concept developed by Aker Yards. The Arctic Container Vessel worth 70 million Euros is capable of breaking 1.5 m ice and can navigate the ice-bound Arctic Ocean all year round, without the assistance of ice breakers. The vessel is intended for traffic on the Northern Sea Route, it will transport metallurgical products from Dudinka on the river of Yenisei to Murmansk |
